POVERTY REDUCTION IN ASIA

The Canadian International Development Agency's (CIDA) Asia Branch is
undertaking a virtual dialogue to learn more about what works to reduce poverty.
Information is available from the CIDA homepage at

Look for the link to the Poverty Reduction Project in Asia in the top right hand
corner. The virtual dialogue includes a section on Universal Access to
Infrastructure Services, including providing telecommunications services to
Asia's poor.

World Development Report on Poverty 2000/01
In September 2000 the World Bank will publish the World Development Report on
poverty, a draft of which is being widely circulated. The Bretton Woods Project
and New Policy Institute have been selected to independently run a global
on-line discussion of the draft from 21st February to 31st March 2000. The Bank
is assigning great importance to the debate and Ravi Kanbur, lead author of the
WDR will respond to the final conference summary. This is your opportunity to
voice comments on the draft and potentially influence the final report.

MAKING CHANGE |
a homeless human rights campaign aimed at
making human rights accessible at the level of the individual to challenge and
change the status quo. We strive to take the poverty movement and
mesh it with the environmental and indigenous campaigns. Primarily
because the indigenous people have struggled longer and harder and have much to
share in their experiences of human rights abuses, displacement, homelessness

The National Anti-Poverty
Commission (NAPC) serves as the coordinating and advisory body of the government
for the implementation of the Social Reform Agenda.It is chaired by President
Joseph Ejercito Estrada. Its Vice Chairperson for the Government Sector is Sec.
Donna Z. Gasgonia, who is also the Presidential Assistant for Poverty
Eradication, NGOs and POs, and Chairperson of the Presidential Commission for
the Urban Poor. NAPC's OIC Lead Convenor is Agrarian Reform Secretary Horacio R.
Morales.NAPC is composed of 17 government agencies and 14 basic sector
representatives.
