Summary

At its twenty-eighth session, the Commission on Population and Development (a) reviewed population trends, policies and programmes, (b) considered follow-up action to be taken by the United Nations to the recommendations of the International Conference on Population and Development and (c) reviewed programme implementation and the proposed programme of work for the biennium 1996-1997.

The Commission held a general debate, during which members exchanged views and national experiences in the area of population. Information was exchanged related to population trends, policies and programmes, the integration of population and development, and international cooperation and assistance. The general debate provided a useful context for a further review of current trends, policies and national programmes as well as multilateral population assistance.

The Commission considered the follow-up action to be taken by the United Nations to the recommendations of the International Conference on Population and Development. Discussions were held on the functioning of the Commission on Population and Development, proposed terms of reference, secretariat support, management, inter-agency coordination and resource base, and work programme of the Commission, including proposed agenda and documentation. The Commission transmitted its views on those issues to the Economic and Social Council for consideration at its substantive session of 1995.

The Commission reviewed programme implementation and the programme of work for the biennium 1996-1997. It expressed its appreciation for the high quality of work of the Population Division of the Department for Economic and Social Information and Policy Analysis and adopted a draft decision for consideration by the Economic and Social Council concerning the programme of work to be carried out by the Population Division during the biennium 1996-1997.
