Implementation Conference:

Stakeholder Action For Our Common Future

Food Security

“Engagement” Meeting / Dinner

New York, Tuesday, February 5th, 2002, 6.30 – 8.30 pm

You are invited to participate in a meeting intended to enrol and engage you in the multi-stakeholder implementation conference, Stakeholder Action For Our Common Future (IC) being held in Johannesburg in August 2002, facilitated by Stakeholder Forum for Our Common Future (formerly UNED Forum).

Context

Global sustainable development agreements need sustained and proactive global action to deliver the desired results, bother by governments and stakeholders. The IC process has been created to facilitate implementation of the Sustainable Development Agreements, on selected issues, through COLLABORATIVE STAKEHOLDER ACTION.

Food Security is one of the four issues, selected through consultations with stakeholder representatives. This meeting has been set up to present the IC process and explore with you possible strategies towards the Implementation Conference and Earth Summit 2002 itself.

Earth Summit 2002 outcomes will include non-negotiated announcement of initiatives and partnerships, by governments as well as stakeholders. The IC process will make a significant contribution to these outcomes.

We are aware that the postponement of the World Food Summit Review to June 2002 may pose specific challenges to your engagement in the Implementation Conference process. However, we believe that the Rome meeting could also serve as an important stepping stone in this process.

Meeting Purpose

To engage stakeholder representatives in the Implementation Conference and the possibility of participating in the “Issue Advisory Group" (IAG) for Food Security.

We would also like to discuss with you how we can best make use of the meetings ahead and capture the energy and engagement they mobilize in concrete, forward-looking outcomes.

Desired Outcome

People are fully informed about the IC and agree to let us know, by mid February, whether they want to participate in the Food Security IAG.
