Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) is a Summit taking place at the
Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, between 26th August
and 4th September 2002. It is to be attended by Heads of
States and government representatives, as well as representatives of
multilateral organisations, intergovernmental organisations, the United
Nations, non-governmental organisations and major groups. It will
discuss how far sustainable development has come since the 1992 UNCED/Earth
Summit in Rio de Janeiro and present the following outcomes:

work programme for the Summit is currently approximately planned as the

is the Sandton Convention Center? The
Sandton Convention Center (SCC) is a purpose built conference facility
in the up-market Sandton suburb of Johannesburg (located to the north of
the central downtown). SCC is a part of the Sandton Square development,
which includes shopping, dining, office and civic amenities. Maps are
available of the SCC’s
location within Sandton
and also of the Sandton
Square Development. The
SCC will become UN territory for the course of the WSSD and therefore
will be controlled in terms of logistics and security by UN officials
from the WSSD Secretariat. Who
will be allowed in to the Sandton Convention Center? Access
to the SCC will be limited to UN officials, government delegates and
Heads of States and representatives of accredited organizations. Only
those with appropriate passes will be allowed to enter, up to a capacity
of 6,000. How

organizations have been accredited to the WSSD? When
is the deadline for accredited organizations to submit their list of

Attendance
at the WSSD event at Sandton Convention Center is limited to
representatives of governments, intergovernmental organizations,
specialized UN agencies and accredited non-governmental organizations. Individuals
or organizations who would like to participate in the WSSD but who have
not already applied for accreditation may only attend if they can find
an accredited organization who is willing to add them to their delegate
listing – perhaps because you have existing links or partnerships with
them, or because you share an area of expertise. Can
organizations still apply for accreditation to the WSSD? The
deadline for accrediting non-governmental is now passed. Only ECOSOC or
CSD accredited NGOs may still activate accreditation to the Summit. What
organizations have been accredited to the WSSD? The

to the WSSD and who were approved at each of the Preparatory Meetings
for the WSSD. When
is the deadline for accredited organizations to submit their list of
delegates? Those
organizations that are accredited to the WSSD have until 16th
August 2002 to submit their list of delegates who will be attending the
WSSD (instructions given with accreditation approval). There is no limit
to the number of delegates an organization can register, but in light of
the 6,000 capacity of the venue the Secretariat has made the following
request: “…we do ask you to keep in mind that we are expecting a very large number
of participants, and to limit yourselves accordingly.” Where
will passes be issued at WSSD? The
issuing of passes to delegates on arrival at the WSSD will take place at
the Sandton Art Gallery in Sandton Square, a few moments walk from
Sandton Convention Center. What
is the difference between accreditation and registration? Accreditation
is the application and approval of an organization to participate in the
WSSD. Registration
is the submission of a delegate listing of participating
representatives of an accredited organization. What
is an ECOSOC or CSD accredited NGO? ECOSOC
accredited NGOs are those organizations who have applied for and been
granted consultative status with the Economic and Social Council
of the UN and have therefore worked with the UN previously. CSD
accredited NGOs are those organizations who participated in the 1992 Rio
Earth Summit, who were all granted consultative status with the UN
system. Both
these types of organization can still activate registration to the
Summit by requesting a password for access to online registration from
the WSSD Secretariat. More information on this can be found on the Major

Side Events
Is
there a programme of planned Side Events? Who
do I contact about Side Events? Can
I hold an event within the Sandton Convention Center? Side
events will take place within the WSSD venue (Sandton Convention Center)
at lunchtimes (1.14 – 2.45 pm) and evenings (6.15 – 8.00 pm) during
the Summit. As such the WSSD Secretariat coordinates them. Side
events must be open to all WSSD delegates and usually take the form of a
roundtable, panel discussion or presentation pertaining to a specific
issue or initiative related to sustainable development. They
are held by, and sponsored by, accredited non-governmental
organizations, intergovernmental organizations, specialized UN agencies
and governments. It is encouraged that for the WSSD several partners
work together to host a single event, as there will be a high volume of
requests for side events. As such, not all requests can expect to be
approved. The
deadline for applications for WSSD Side Events was 20 June 2002. The
programme of approved events has not yet been published. More
information on side events can be found on the Side
Events Page of the WSSD website. Is
