What is the Sandton Convention Center?

The Sandton Convention Center (SCC) is a purpose built conference facility in the up-market Sandton suburb of Johannesburg (located to the north of the central downtown). SCC is a part of the Sandton Square development, which includes shopping, dining, office and civic amenities. Maps are available of the SCC’s location within Sandton and also of the Sandton Square Development.

The SCC will become UN territory for the course of the WSSD and therefore will be controlled in terms of logistics and security by UN officials from the WSSD Secretariat.

Who will be allowed in to the Sandton Convention Center?

Access to the SCC will be limited to UN officials, government delegates and Heads of States and representatives of accredited organizations. Only those with appropriate passes will be allowed to enter, up to a capacity of 6,000.

Who will attend WSSD?

Attendance at the WSSD event at Sandton Convention Center is limited to representatives of governments, intergovernmental organizations, specialized UN agencies and accredited non-governmental organizations.

Can I attend the WSSD?

Individuals or organizations who would like to participate in the WSSD but who have not already applied for accreditation may only attend if they can find an accredited organization who is willing to add them to their delegate listing – perhaps because you have existing links or partnerships with them, or because you share an area of expertise.

Can organizations still apply for accreditation to the WSSD?

The deadline for accrediting non-governmental is now passed. Only ECOSOC or CSD accredited NGOs may still activate accreditation to the Summit.

What organizations have been accredited to the WSSD?

The list of ECOSOC accredited organizations [click link ‘Browse the list of NGOs in Status‘]

The list of CSD accredited organizations

The lists of organizations who applied to the WSSD Secretariat for accreditation to the WSSD and who were approved at each of the Preparatory Meetings for the WSSD.

When is the deadline for accredited organizations to submit their list of delegates?

Those organizations that are accredited to the WSSD have until 16th August 2002 to submit their list of delegates who will be attending the WSSD (instructions given with accreditation approval). There is no limit to the number of delegates an organization can register, but in light of the 6,000 capacity of the venue the Secretariat has made the following request: “…we do ask you to keep in mind that we are expecting a very large number of participants, and to limit yourselves accordingly.”

Where will passes be issued at WSSD?

The issuing of passes to delegates on arrival at the WSSD will take place at the Sandton Art Gallery in Sandton Square, a few moments walk from Sandton Convention Center.

What is the difference between accreditation and registration?

Accreditation is the application and approval of an organization to participate in the WSSD.

Registration is the submission of a delegate listing of participating representatives of an accredited organization.

What is an ECOSOC or CSD accredited NGO?

ECOSOC accredited NGOs are those organizations who have applied for and been granted consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the UN and have therefore worked with the UN previously. CSD accredited NGOs are those organizations who participated in the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, who were all granted consultative status with the UN system.

Both these types of organization can still activate registration to the Summit by requesting a password for access to online registration from the WSSD Secretariat. More information on this can be found on the Major Groups Accreditation Page of the official WSSD website.

Can I hold an event within the Sandton Convention Center?

Side events will take place within the WSSD venue (Sandton Convention Center) at lunchtimes (1.14 – 2.45 pm) and evenings (6.15 – 8.00 pm) during the Summit. As such the WSSD Secretariat coordinates them.

Side events must be open to all WSSD delegates and usually take the form of a roundtable, panel discussion or presentation pertaining to a specific issue or initiative related to sustainable development.

They are held by, and sponsored by, accredited non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations, specialized UN agencies and governments. It is encouraged that for the WSSD several partners work together to host a single event, as there will be a high volume of requests for side events. As such, not all requests can expect to be approved.

The deadline for applications for WSSD Side Events was 20 June 2002. The programme of approved events has not yet been published.
