What
is the Global People’s Forum? What
is the main stakeholder event in Johannesburg? What
event have South African NGOs arranged? As at the
Rio Earth Summit individuals and civil society groups will coalesce in
parallel to the official Summit at a Global People’s Forum, run by
South African NGOs. This will
take place at the NASCREC Expo Center between 19th August and 4th September, with an Opening
Ceremony taking place on 23rd August. Its central rallying
point shall be “A Sustainable World is Possible". The Global People’s Forum will be a
forum and space for all forms of civil society, but pulling to the fore
those involved in social change processes like the landless people,
anti-globalisation and human rights - with a view to integrating
sustainability within visions and actions.
The first three days of the Forum
will deal with crosscutting issues under the theme of ‘Building Social
Movements for Sustainable Development’ and will take the form of a
political event, which will involve key speakers to lead debates. The
three days will cover Governance and Self-determination, Globalisation
and Poverty Eradication. This will be followed by seven days
of thematic workshops on: Human Security, Food Security, Trade and
Economics, Financing Development, Science and Technology, Health and
Education, and Environment. There
will also be outside activities, visits to communities and/or projects,
review and/or revival of Alternative Treaties, exhibitions and parallel
events, and a media centre. The Global People’s Forum will also
host pre-summits of some of the major groups, enabling groups to
finalise their Summit agenda. These may include Youth, Disabled, Women,
Faith groups, Indigenous People, Civics, Labour and NGOs. How
do I register for the Global People’s Forum? Registration
for the Global People’s Forum can be completed online.
There is a $150 cost for delegates, and there will be online payment
facilities for this, as well as other means for those without the
required credit card. Is
there transport to the Global People’s Forum venue? The NASREC
venue is located near the famous Soweto township, in Zone
4. There will be transport in place to bring delegates in from
accommodation throughout the Gauteng province to the Ubuntu Village hub.
There will then be shuttle services connecting Ubuntu Village and the
Global People’s Forum. Is
there any funding for attending the Global People’s Forum? Some
limited funding for participation will be available. Please enquire via
