details for the WSSD Secretariat PrepCom
IV is the final time that governments, stakeholders and the
international community can come together before the World Summit takes
place in August. It is the most high level event thus far and includes
three days of Ministerial involvement. It is the last opportunity for
the Chairman’s text – the basis of the Johannesburg outcome document
– to be discussed, and will be the forum where any political
declaration is decided upon. It will also set the programme of work for
the Summit. As
decided at the close of the last meeting, PrepCom IV is being preceded
by three days of informal discussion on the Chairman’s Text. This will
entail consultations within country groupings on Friday 24th
and informal meetings of the whole on Saturday 25th and
Sunday 26th. The
schedule of work and other official documents for PrepCom IV can be
downloaded from www.johannesburgsummit.org/html/documents/prepcom4.html. As this meeting is an official UN event in the WSSD process it is being overseen by the Summit Secretariat, who are in charge of the substance and work programme, as well as the logistics of the meeting. deadline for requesting side events – which are officially recognised
meetings which run at lunchtime and evenings where governments,
organisations and major group representatives can come together to
publicise and discuss specific issues and initiatives – has now
passed. However, information on how to apply for a side event slot at
the Summit can be obtained from www.johannesburgsummit.org/html/basic_info/sideevents. What
